Science – Augmented Reality

Science – Augmented Reality

BBC Creative R&D teamed up with Westminster CLC to produce innovating Augmented Reality resources for science education.

A number of subjects were identified that students find particularly difficult, and that could be effectively taught using AR visualisations. Areas of focus included the structure and function of cell components, human anatomy, state change and the structure of the atom.

We produced activities that involved constructing and manipulating models, and adjusting simulation parameters. For example the state change activity worked by using two AR markers to warm and cool a volume of molecules. The molecules changed their behaviour in relation to temperature, from solid to liquid to gas.

User testing and evaluation was conducted at the BBC 21st Century Classroom with groups of Westminster school pupils, and at a number of sessions with science teachers at Westminster schools.
